TELUGU LANGUAGE: English as the medium of instruction in the place of Telugu

The recent decision of the Andhra Pradesh government to introduce English medium in the place of Telugu medium in schools and colleges continues to be the talking point of its merits and demerits not only in the truncated state of Andhra Pradesh but also in India.

Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy wants to make education through English medium for all the students of the state. He noted that sending one’s children to English medium schools should not only be the privilege of the established families across political parties (and he took the names of India’s Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, movie star and politician Pavan Kalyan and former Chief Minister Chandra Babu Naidu for practising hypocrisy – sending their children or grandchildren to English medium schools but opposing the scrapping state-run Telugu medium educational institutions for English medium).

Subhash is concerned about the future of Telugu language suspecting the language could be killed if English is embraced right from the start of educational journey. He recollects that he was a student of Telugu medium throughout his life but it was not barrier to make a journey in his profession.
